William "Bill" Mathison Obituary

William Ivan "Bill" Mathison, aged 82, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025, in Nanaimo, BC.   Born on March 9, 1942, in Hamiota, MB, to Duncan and Jean Mathison, Bill grew up in a loving family alongside his siblings Peggy, Phyllis, Ron, and David.  He learned the importance of hard work at a young age, as he cheerfully and capably helped on the family farm.

Bill was known for his humour, wisdom and kindness. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Cheryl (née McDougall), his high school sweetheart, with whom he shared a life full of laughter and love. Together, they raised two children, Lori and Ryan, instilling in them the values of family, integrity, and joy. Bill's role as a grandfather to Nicolas and Madeleine, children of Lori and Ken Burns, was one of his greatest joys.

Bill was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). It was during his basic training that Bill formed lifelong friendships with Murray Martin and Sandy McCullough.  He also earned his BSc in Animal Science from the University of Manitoba.  This background led him to establish the serology section at the Winnipeg RCMP forensic lab, where his work was instrumental in solving and prosecuting numerous cases.

Upon retirement, Bill and Cheryl embraced the tranquility and beauty of the West Coast and recently celebrated their 60th anniversary.  They loved hiking together, and Bill loved a good game of golf, especially when he & son Ryan played together.

Bill's infectious smile and quick wit made him a joy to be around. He had a remarkable gift for storytelling. His generous spirit extended beyond his family; he touched the lives of many with his kindness and genuine interest in their well-being.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and caring with his wife Cheryl, his children Lori (Ken) and Ryan, his grandchildren Madeleine and Nicolas, and his siblings Phyllis (with her husband Bill) and David (with his wife Beth). Bill was predeceased by his sister Peggy and brother Ron (Heather).

Bill Mathison was a man who lived his life with purpose and joy. Although Bill will be deeply missed, the stories of his kindness, his laughter, and his love will be cherished and retold by those who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Rest in peace, Bill. Your spirit lives on through the countless lives you've touched.
