On January 29, 2024, Percy Pierce passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Virden Health Centre. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife Sheila and daughters Georgina (Lyle), Lorelei (Alfred), Susan and Erin. He was predecessors by his parents William and Helen Pierce and his brother Charlie Pierce.
Percy, otherwise known as Mick, was born and raised in Beulah, Manitoba. He grew up loving horses, cattle, farming and nature.
In 1967, he married the love of his life, Sheila Foxton. Together they raised four daughters while operating a family century farm. He actively grain farmed until the fall of 2023, his ninety first year. He enjoyed raising Hereford and Charolais cattle.
Percy was a loving and nurturing father. He was a huge supporter of his daughters’ education and extra curricular activities. He had immense influence in cultivating a strong work ethic by example. Some of his favourite sayings were “hit the hay” and “keep your nose to the grindstone”.
Eating brought him much enjoyment. He loved homemade baking, garden produce, fruit preserves, large servings of porridge, potato dishes, and lots of jam. As a cattle producer, he thoroughly enjoyed a grain fed steak or roast.
Percy’s favourite pass times were vegetable gardening, dancing to old time music with Sheila, and attending horse races, farm shows and music concerts. In his spare time, he was a voracious reader of farm material, environmental updates, political news and historical accounts.
Percy celebrated his life through the seasons. He cultivated friendships over generations. He planted seeds of hope and fertilized growth in those around him. Percy harvested a long life as a good man.
His family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Hammel, his Family Physician for her advocacy and consistently thorough medical care in his later years and during his palliative care. The Virden Health Centre Nursing and Support Staff’s thoughtful care helped make Percy’s final days more comfortable and his family’s palliative care journey more bearable.
A private family internment will be held at a future date.
Donations can be made in Percy’s memory to Virden Palliative Care at Virden Health Services 480 King Street, Box 400, Virden, MB R0M 2C0.
