Olive Jean (nee Hazlewood) Walker (Reid)

quietly passed away on May 16, 2026.

Olive was born in the Hamiota Cottage Hospital on August 18, 1931 to Jean (nee Delbridge) and Samual, moving to the family farm. A year later, her mother passed away. She spent her life searching for substitute mothers and was fortunate to have been blessed with so many.

Olive graduated from Hamiota School in June 1949 and moved to Brandon. Her diploma from the Business College gave her employment for a number of years in Brandon. In 1952, she joined Rupert and Cora Henderson's family with their move to Edmonton. She met Frank Walker and moved with him to Calgary. She ran the house while raising their four children. Her volunteer work included school associations, the Family YMCA, and political parties.

With the children in high school, she started working for the Mountview Health Unit as secretary of the Home Care Program. The rural clients reminded her of her farm. She stayed for over twenty years until Calgary absorbed the unit into the city program.

In 1986, she started square dancing to be part of the 1988 Calgary Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Doug Reid became her dance partner as they travelled throughout Alberta to many events, becoming her partner in life. They visited Europe and danced at an International Square Dance Convention in Holland in 1990.

In 1996, Olive and Doug moved to the acreage in Rapid City, Manitoba. They enjoyed many years of Peace, Beauty, and Entertainment. Friends, Fishing, and Furniture filled their lives.

Olive was heartbroken when her youngest daughter, Cynthia, passed away in 2014. The family support helped with her grief.

Doug passed away in December 2023 and Olive moved to Brandon for a quiet retirement from cooking and cleaning.

In addition to the many friends, Hanna (Brent), Jay, Lola, Myles, and Romeo, Olive is survived by her children, Lynwood, Heather, and Kathryn, as well as grandchildren, Jennifer (PJ), Ana (Brian), Kevin (Bethany), Tanya (David), Byron, Marina, and Doug's granddaughter Tabitha. Three great grand children completed her family, Dylan, Emily, and James.

Her volunteer work was with many organizations. While in Rapid City, she was proud to help with the Terry Fox Run. Her love of reading made the Rapid City Library a favourite place.

A graveside service will be held at the Hamiota Cemetery, Hamiota, MB on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 2:00pm. Bring a lawn chair if you wish.
