Marjorie Sikora (Mathison) Obituary

April 7, 1936 – June 4, 2025

If life were a curling match, Marjorie Elizabeth Mathison (née Stewart, later Sikora) was the one who always managed to throw a perfect stone, steady hands, keen eyes, and a knack for keeping things sliding smoothly, even when life’s ice got a little rough.

Born in Hamiota, Manitoba, in the heart of a prairie spring, Marjorie was the daughter of Vance and Ethel (Dickie) Stewart. She grew up among stories of settlers, schoolhouses, and the kind of small-town hustle where everyone knows if you’re late for church. Graduating from Hamiota High in 1954, Marjorie sharpened her skills at Wheat City Business College before returning home to keep local organizations running like a Swiss watch.

Marjorie was never content to be a background player. She worked as secretary in both the Municipal and Agricultural offices, wrangled church bulletins at the Hamiota United Church for years and kept the Hamiota Ladies’ Curling Club on its toes for more than two decades. Rumour has it, she could handle a meeting, a meal, and a misbehaving furnace all at the same time, without missing a beat.

Marjorie married Lawrence “Buck” Mathison in 1959. Together, they farmed, raised two sons (Wayne and Neil), built a new home, and lived out the kind of partnership that’s more about grit and laughter than Hallmark cards. Marjorie especially loved being part of the farm, sharing seeding and harvest meals with Wayne and Neil, and playing an active role in the rhythms of farm life. After Buck’s passing, Marjorie’s story added a new chapter when she married Willard Sikora in 1990 and lived at Esterhazy Saskatchewan before moving back to Hamiota. He passed away in 2019.

She was a farm wife, an office woman, worked at the IGA, a community builder, and the keeper of family lore. Marjorie’s life spanned eras, she saw old log schoolhouses give way to modern buildings, and watched the land around Hamiota change, but her roots never wavered. She was equally at home with the grandkids/great-grand kids or bookkeeping for the farm, cheering at the rink, or school basketball and sharing stories over coffee at the Hamiota Hotel.

Predeceased by her first husband, Lawrence, and her parents, Vance and Ethel, Marjorie leaves behind a grateful family: her sons Wayne (Kimberley) and Neil (Arlene), grandchildren, Paige Mathison (Mickey), Laine Dodds (Jesse), Brooke Harms (Shay), Shayna Mathison, great-grandchildren, Hanson, and Oakland Harms and stepchildren, step-grandchildren, step great-grandchildren and a community that knew her as a steady hand behind the scenes.

If you want to honour Marjorie, here’s her recipe for a life well-lived: go for coffee, chit chat and have a good laugh.
