Jean (Sunley) Strachan

Elizabeth Jean Strachan passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 30, 2024 at Birch Lodge PCH in Hamiota.

Jean was born on June 28, 1937, in Hamiota to Ellery and Janet (Bell) Sunley, the seventh of nine children. She was raised on the farm at Decker, and took most of her schooling at Decker School, finishing up in Hamiota. After school she worked for a few years at the Royal Bank. On October 19, 1957 she married Garth Strachan and they settled in to the Strachan family farm in the Scotia district. They raised three sons, Brent, Dallas and Dennis, and welcomed her great niece Lynda Jane Hoskins into their family in 1973.  

In 1984, Garth and Jean built a new house and retired to Hamiota. They started spending their winters in Weslaco Texas until Garth’s health began to fail. A few years after Garth’s death in 2005, Jean moved into a condo in Hamiota. In 2015 she sold her condo and moved into Lilac Residence.  Jean then moved into Birch Lodge PCH in November of 2016.

Jean is lovingly remembered by:

Her son Brent (Wanda) and grandchildren Sheldon (Chrystal) and Katie (William) Findlater. Great grandchildren Alec, Libby, Isla and Liam.

Her daughter in law Nancy and grandchildren Tyler (Serena) and Joel (Michael). Great grandchildren Emery, Austyn, Blake and Navy.

Her niece Lynda Jane Hoskins (Glen Coady) and children Justice, Stashan, Tannaysia, and Kighe.

Her brother Lyle (Gwen) Sunley, sister in-law Sheila Sunley, and sister in law Joyce Dekoch (Strachan)

Many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Jean was predeceased by her parents, her husband Garth Strachan, her sons Dallas and Dennis Strachan. Her brothers and spouses, Bob (Edna), Russell (Ellen), Purve (Helen). Her brothers John and Keith. Her sisters and spouses Belle (Fred) Butcher, Gwen (Ed) Elliott. Her sister in-law Jean Sunley.

A service to celebrate Jean's life will be held at the Hamiota Community Centre, Hamiota, MB on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at 2:00pm. Interment will take place at a later date at the Scotia Cemetery. A recording of Jean's service can be viewed below for those that were not able to attend.
