Elizabeth Myrtle Phillips of Brandon, MB, passed away December 25, 2023, with family by her side. Elizabeth (“Liz”) was born June 5, 1931, to Wilfred and Myrtle Hogeland. Myrtle (and Liz’s twin brother, Douglas) passed away during birth (and 2 days later), leading her Aunt Edna and Uncle Sydney Smith to adopt Liz into their family (with their sons Murray and Jack).Liz was predeceased by her Smith family and by her Hogeland family, which included sisters, Doris Asselstine and Aleta de Keruzec, and her brother Maurice Hogeland. Liz grew up working at the family’s general store in Cardale. It was there that she met her future husband, Francis (“Shorty”) Phillips. They married and began farming in 1951, and started a family the following year. Shorty passed away in 2015; Liz and Shorty are together again. They are survived by daughters Bev (Richard) Dyer and Marie (Glen) Tait, and sons Don (Stephanie), Doug (Shelly), and Fred (Barb), as well as 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Always the source of love and compassion in the family, Mom is fondly remembered for her baking, Buckley’s and mecuricome first aid, and harvest time sandwiches. She also earned the nickname “deadeye” within the family, for her farmyard marksmanship. Liz is grateful for the friendship of many in the Cardale, Rivers, and Brandon communities.
As per her wishes, a funeral will not be held. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held in the Marney Cemetery at a later date.
