Elgin Rogers Obituary

In Loving Memory Of

Elgin Murray Rogers

October 16, 1950 ~ April 15, 2021

Age 70 Years

Elgin Murray Rogers, of Hamiota, passed away on April 15, 2021.

Elgin was born Oct 16, 1950, a third son for Harvey and Gladys (Mabon) Rogers of the Methven District near Wawanesa.

Elgin enjoyed growing up on the farm, attended school in Wawanesa, graduating in 1968.  After taking a 10 month mechanics course at ACC, Elgin joined his father on the farm, slowly taking over the business.  Elgin also worked for 20 years as a seasonal part-time employee at the Wawanesa & District Recreation Center.

In 1986 Elgin married Catherine Hill (Cherniski) of Brandon and adopted her 2 children, James and Kelly.  The next year their son Mark was born.  After Cathy and Kelly moved back to Brandon, Elgin raised his 2 sons on the farm.  Elgin enjoyed playing baseball and curling in his spare time.

In 2003 Elgin rented out his farm and got a job on a large potato farm near Shilo.  This continued until 2011 when Elgin moved to Hamiota to be with his partner Mary Byers.  In Hamiota, Elgin worked for the municipality as an assistant facilities foreman, working in the Sports Complex in the winter and on the ball diamonds in the summer, until he retired in 2016.

Elgin and Mary took trips to Jamaica, a Caribbean cruise, a bus trip to Branson Missouri, and a driving trip to Black Hills and Yellowstone, enjoying them all very much.

In 2017 Elgin was diagnosed with Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension a rare disease that affects the breathing.

Elgin was a member of the Wawanesa and Hamiota Lions Clubs for 39 years.  He recently received the highest award in Lionism, a Melvin Jones Fellowship, for his many years of service.  Elgin enjoyed watching most sports on TV, but baseball and the Blue Jays were his favorite.  He made several trips to Minneapolis to watch the Blue Jays play the Twins.

Elgin was predeceased by his parents Harvey and Gladys, an older brother Kenny, and Mary’s son Derek.  He is survived by his partner Mary Byers, his children James (Freeda) of Portage, Kelly of Brandon, and Mark of Wawanesa, and Mary’s son Sheldon Byers of Brandon.  He had 5 grandchildren, Brooke, Mason, Blake, Nash, and Daltyn, also brother Mervyn (Sandra) of Winnipeg; nieces Kimberly Slack and Heather Knox, nephew Dustan Rogers, and Derek Byers partner April Magnifico.

Cremation has taken place, and his ashes were interred at a graveside service at Methven Cemetery on Monday, April 26th at 2pm with Rev. Harvey Hurren officiating. The video of Elgin’s service can be viewed at www.campbellfuneralhome.ca.  For those wishing, a donation in Elgin’s memory can be made to the Wawanesa Community Foundation, Box 209, Wawanesa, MB, R0K 2G0 or to the Hamiota Community Foundation Inc, Box 100, Hamiota, MB, R0M 0T0.
