Doreen Espey
Annie ‘Doreen’ Espey passed away on July 4, 2020 at the Hamiota Health Centre. Doreen was predeceased by husband, Arthur Espey and daughter, Maureen Fisher. She was the mother of Terry, Karen (Larry), Kim (Tim), and Bruce (Omar); grandmother of Dianne, Ryan, Mark, Kim, Susan, Dale, Steven, Michael, Matthew and Kaley; and great-grandmother of Danton, Connor, Kieran, Talia, Brooklyn, Jordan, Kaydance, Arek, Heather, Evan, Amber, Aurora, Celeste and Mason. She will be dearly missed.
Doreen, daughter of William and Charlotte Watt, was born on the Oakner farm on January 29, 1932. She was the youngest of 6 children: Gordon (Helen) Watt, Jessie (Gordon) Thompson, Vera (Whit) Vail, Ella (Henry) Ellis and Wilf (Reine) Watt. Doreen married Art on August 27, 1949 in Oakner. They farmed in the Oak River area until retiring to town. She later moved into Oak Dale Place.
Doreen led a very active life. She started making mud pies as a little girl and later made the best pies ever. She loved going to the movies, the fair, music, dancing, and curling. Gardening and helping on the farm were important to her. She was an avid card player beginning at the age of two, playing crib with her Dad, and continued throughout her life. She enjoyed reading and was always writing notes and letters. She travelled across Canada, the States, and Europe. Doreen was an active member of the Oak River United Church and the U.C.W. She enthusiastically pursued genealogy of her family, was proud of her research, and shared her expertise with all.
Funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at 2:00 at the Oak River United Church with Rev. Linda Clark officiating. Interment followed at the Oak River cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons Ryan, Mark, Dale, Steven, Michael, and Matthew. Arrangements were with Campbell Funeral Home, Hamiota, Manitoba.
