Ada Fleming Obituary

Ada M. FLEMING born June 5th, 1921, died February 21st, 2019 at Birch Lodge, Hamiota.  Cherishing fond memories are her brother John (Jack) Fleming and nephews Garry Watson (Louise) and Dale Watson (Roberta) and their families.  Ada was preceded by her parents Ernest and Pearl Fleming, sister, Jean Watson, brother in law Don Watson, infant sister and brother, Edith and Robert.

Ada was born on the family farm a few miles north of Crandall, MB.   When Ada was a young teenager she took over all the duties of the household after her mother passed away.  She farmed with her brother Jack her whole life.  Ada and Jack took on the responsibilities of the farm following in the footsteps of their Grandfather, Robert M. Fleming who homesteaded the home quarter section in 1887.  As it was a mixed farming operation of grain, cattle, horses, pigs, chickens and turkeys, Ada was kept busy every day with chores as well as doing the cooking, baking, canning, gardening and cleaning.  Many, many times a year Jean and Don (and boys when they were still living at home) visited Ada and Jack on Sundays.  Ada was a wonderful cook and baker; Easters and Thanksgivings were a tradition where family and friends gathered at the farm to enjoy Ada's scrumptious suppers.

Ada was a valued member of the Crandall UCW and was active in the organization for over 50 years. She worked tirelessly at the community suppers held in the Crandall Hall for many years.  Although Ada never had children of her own she was always first in line to carry and look after any baby in the room.  Because farm animals do not "take time off", neither Ada nor Jack ever took time off  to go on a vacation but when she and Jean were teenagers they often took trips to Winnipeg by train where they spent time with relatives for a couple of days at a time.  Ada and Jack hosted the celebration of their farm being in the Fleming family for 100 years in 1987 which was attended by over 200 family and friends. They retired from the farm in 2004 and moved into a suite in the Park Lodge in Hamiota.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Personal Care Homes (Morley House, Shoal Lake - 2013 and 2014; Birch Lodge, Hamiota - 2015 to 2019) for the excellent care they provided for Ada in her final 6 years. A Celebration of  Life will be held Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 in the Campbell Funeral Home Chapel in Hamiota at 2:00 p.m. followed by a lunch in the Hamiota United Church basement. A private internment for the immediate family will be done prior to the Celebration of  Life. Anyone who would like to do so may make a donation to the Birch Lodge Activity Fund.
