Rev. Brenda Irene Ferguson

Ferguson – Rev. Brenda Irene Ferguson was born in Victoria, B.C. in 1945.

She was always drawn to library work and had a part time job at the Victoria Public Library for many of her school years.

After graduation from Victoria University, with a major in German and Anthropology, Brenda moved to Toronto where she got a degree in Library Science.

But while in Toronto, Brenda was drawn to the Toronto School of Theology and finally responded to God’s call to Christian ministry, enrolling at Emmanuel College in 1970.  She graduated and was ordained in 1973 when she was settled in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario Conference.

Brenda spent all of her 45 years of ordained ministry in Manitoba, serving 3 pastoral charges:  Benito-Durban-Kenville; Binscarth-Foxwarren; and Virden-Wallace.

Brenda served the wider church on many Presbytery and Conference committees and as an educational supervisor to several people who were studying for ministry in the United Church.

Raised in a city on the west coast, Brenda always missed “her” ocean, but loved the Prairies and was committed to rural ministry.

Brenda retired to Chimo Resort, just east of Rivers, where she enjoyed her many books, her computer and tech toys, and her pets:  3 cats and a dog.

Brenda continued to serve the local church, putting together the powerpoint for Sunday worship.

She also supported the local Legion where she was a member for 13 years, by doing the service folder for the Remembrance Day Service.

During the last years of her life, Brenda endured painful and limiting health problems, the cause of which was only recently discovered.

Many people from every congregation she served kept in touch with her, right up to her final days with us.

A memorial service was held in Rivers United Church on June 11, 2018, officiated by her long-time friend, Rev. Glenna Beauchamp.  She was buried, as was her request, in Riverside Cemetery, in Harlington District, near Kenville, MB on June 12th.
