Gordon "Gordie" Lyall Obituary

LYALL: It is with great sadness that we announce Gordon Wayne Lyall of Hamiota, MB, born September 3, 1940, passed away at the Hamiota District Health Centre on August 2, 2018 at 77 years of age after a brief battle with cancer.  Gordie grew up on a farm in Kenton and attended Kenton, Hamiota and Oak Lake Schools until his completion of grade 12.  Gordie helped on the farm and played baseball, hockey and curled until 1960.  He took his Teacher Training in 1959-60 and taught in Deleau, MB. for 3 years where he met Karen.  In 1963 he moved to Hamiota to teach and married Karen.  He played for the Hamiota Red Sox from 1964-1972.  Gordie first taught in the Elementary School and later in the Collegiate.  During that time he earned his B.A. Degree by attending summer school and intersessions.  He coached the Senior Girls Volleyball team and taught Driver Education for many years, retiring in 1995.  Gordie's passion for sports was well known - hockey, golfing, curling, but in particular, baseball.  As a result of Gordie's involvement as baseball player, coach and umpire, he was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.  When Gordie finally retired from playing. coaching, umpiring and refereeing, he made the transition to being a spectator at the grandchildren's games.  Gordie has always been an integral part of the Hamiota Community. He organized inter-club golfing, bridge tournaments, Senior Curling Bonspiels and other events too numerous to mention.  When he wasn't watching sports either live or on television, he loved playing cards, pool, doing word puzzles and gardening.  Gordie leaves to mourn his wife Karen of nearly 55 years, son Brad (Carmen), daughter Tracy (Kelvin) Kowalchuk, grandchildren Madison, Morgan and Mitchell Lyall, and Tyler and Jason McKean, as well as extended family.  Gordie was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Jean.  We wish to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Hamiota District Health Centre. Special thanks to Campbell Funeral Home.  Gordie will be sadly missed by all, as was demonstrated by the number of friends and family who attended his graveside service and reception in Hamiota.  In memory of Gordie, donations may be made to the Hamiota Community Foundation Inc., PO Box 100, Hamiota, MB., R0M 0T0, or to a local charity of one's choice.
