PATERSON -- Sarah "Eileen" Paterson, beloved wife of the late Bruce Paterson passed away at
Birch Lodge in Hamiota, Manitoba on October 30,2018 at the age of 93 years.
Eileen was born in Oak River, Manitoba to her parents Robert and Margaret Allen on December 2,
1924; the second of six children. After finishing school in Oak River, she came to McConnell to
work in her Uncle Jack Allen's store where she met her future husband Bruce. They were married
on October 10, 1946. In those days, money was in short supply so they ran a mixed farming
operation, drove the school van, sold eggs and had a huge garden. They never seemed to run out
of energy. They had two sons born at Hamiota hospital; Arnold in 1950 and Larry in 1953. The farm
grew larger and with two kids there was more work, but Eileen never complained and was always
happy. When Arnold and Larry got older and into sports, she and Bruce were always there and no
matter how cold the rinks were, she was still determined to watch from outside. Eileen taught
Sunday School, belonged to the WI and the UCW and she did a lot of work for the McConnell 4H
Calf Club where Bruce was the leader. She also hauled grain, pitched bales and looked after her
garden. On September 14, 1989 her life changed drastically when Bruce died suddenly at home
after combining the night before. Larry had come home to farm a few years prior, so that was a
great relief for her. Five years later Larry was diagnosed with cancer and he passed away on
October 25, 1995. Eileen stayed on the farm for two more years before moving in to Hamiota.
Eileen enjoyed living in town, but always missed the farm. Eileen was predeceased by her husband
Bruce, son Larry, brother Bill Allen and his wife Jean, sister Doreen and her husband Dallas
Hunsaker, sister in law Beatrice Allen, and brothers-in-law Frank Mathison and Bill Bradley. Eileen
is survived by her son Arnold (Nergis) of Hamiota and his children: Jacquie (Darren) Turcotte of
Whitecourt, AB; Julie (Michael) Daniels and Wade (Shannon) Paterson of Calgary and their mother
Chris Paterson. She is also survived by Larry's children: Bryce (Michelle) Paterson of Russell,
Manitoba; Darcy Paterson of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Brett (Monica) Paterson of Regina, Sask., and
their mother Debbie (Dallis) Johns of Hamiota. There are also 13 great grandchildren: Kaycie,
Grayden and Kale Turcotte; Jordyn and Nate Daniels; Kamble and Ryland Paterson; Michaela Clark
and Eva Paterson; Reese, Kaelyn, Maya and Colton Paterson. Eileen is also survived by 3 siblings:
Ella Mathison of Hamiota, Bessie Bradley and Jack Allen of Brandon, as well as sister-in-law Isobel
Paterson of Lethbridge AB. A Funeral service was held at the Hamiota United Church on
Wednesday November 07, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with lunch following at the Hamiota Community
Centre. Burial of the urn was at the family plot in Hamiota. Donations may be made to the Birch
Lodge Personal Care Home - Activity Fund c/o Hamiota District Health Centre or the Hamiota
United Church Memorial Fund, Hamiota R0M 0T0.
The family would like to sincerely thank Elsie Dickenson, Isobel Basso and the Hamiota United
